W3 Total Cache + Google Drive CDN = Deprecated!

Updated on November 2, 2017

Probably I’m too late to write about this, but I was not aware of it until I enabled Google drive as CDN in W3 Total Cache plugin. I have been dreaming for a long time to use cheap CDN for my website and only yesterday I realized W3 Total Cache supports Google Drive as CDN. Everyone knows that Google drive offers free storage space up to 15GB (at the time of writing this article) and that was more than enough to host statics files of this website. With a big smile on my face, I enabled CDN in W3 Total Cache and started uploading all static files (images, JavaScript, CSS etc..) to Google drive to only see drive returning 404 errors.

W3 Total Cache + Google Drive CDN = Deprecated!

You know what, Google has deprecated web hosting support since August 31, 2015 and it allowed customers to use the feature until August 31, 2016.

Why W3TC didn’t remove Google drive from CDN option?

I’m using the latest version of W3 Total Cache plugin (0.9.5.4, at the time of writing this article), which still allows you to choose Google Drive as CDN.

I’m not sure why W3TC developers haven’t removed this option yet. I don’t see any information regarding this in plugin page as well.

So if you are someone like me (I already found one here) who was not aware of Google’s deprecation of web hosting support, then this is for you – W3 Total Cache + Google Drive CDN = Deprecated!

What’s next? If you can afford to pay for good CDN service such as MaxCDN or KeyCDN, then W3 Total Cache supports that. If not, then you need to disable CDN to serve contents from your own hosting. To do that, go to Performance > General Settings and scroll down to CDN section & uncheck Enable.
