Apple aims to improve its autofocus and OIS features for the latest iPhone
The Apple iPhone is a device which is known for its innovation. But in recent times, Apple is lacking that and looking to regain that name. So, the company is looking to improve some of the features of its iPhone series and according to a patent filed by Apple, which has made its way to the US patent website, is actually a change in the camera mechanism. A new VCM OIS Module is actually going to be used.
Here’s the abstract for the new module.
A lens actuator module including an autofocus (AF) mechanism capable of moving a lens according to at least three degrees of freedom and an optical image stabilization (OIS) mechanism capable of moving the lens according to at least two degrees of freedom. The AF mechanism may have a coil and a magnet assembly for driving movement of the lens according to the at least three degrees of freedom. The optical image stabilization (OIS) mechanism may include a coil and a magnet assembly for driving movement of the lens according to the at least two degrees of freedom.
The abstract includes a term called degrees of freedom. Any idea what that means? If you don’t, then don’t worry. Let me explain. For a system, it generally means linear or rotary movement along the different axis. In this case, it means the movement of the camera lens along the X or the Y or the Z axis. The camera seems to feature a different mechanism altogether and using actuators, the process of hand movement is pretty much restricted and this can lead to better image quality and less blurring during shaking or sudden movement. The OIS is also expected to bring in better video quality while moving.
