Car makers to add Android to the dashboard
So, Google released KitKat a while ago. Recently, a version update of KitKat is also made available. What’s the next thing restless Google wants to do with Android? Give it wheels. Yes. Google has teamed up with major car manufacturers to bring the Android mobile operating system.
The first cars with complete Siri integration came into being in 2012 with Apple’s innovation. Hyundai and Honda are part of Apple’s iOS partnership. Then came the Sync system in Ford which was based on Microsoft technology. However, even though Google is the new-comer, it sure has the most pompous welcome.
The company has announced the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA). Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai, NVIDIA and a small coterie of car makes have put their names to the OOA. Both Hyundai and Honda are also in Apple’s rival iOS in the car-fellowship, suggesting that cars may not necessarily be tied to one platform.
Google will work with car manufacturers to “enable new forms of integration with Android devices, and adapting Android for the car to make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable” Patrick Brady, director of Android engineering, wrote in a blog post on Monday.
“Today, millions of people already bring Android phones and tablets into their cars, but it’s not yet a driving-optimized experience. Wouldn’t it be great if you could bring your favorite apps and music with you, and use them safely with your car’s built-in controls and in-dash display? Together with our OAA partners, we’re working to enable new forms of integration with Android devices, and adapting Android for the car to make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable for everyone.” Brady said.
The OAA has assured that cars to using the Android platform will hit the road within this year. It also is expected that the company will bring out self-driving cars. But the technology is due another 10 years.
