DataWind confident to capture India’s smartphone market with PocketSurfer range

DataWind, the Canadian start-up with Indian market, began its venture with the release of Aakash tablets. Although the Aakash tablet computers were comparatively inexpensive, it sure invited a good deal of criticisms and an amount of bad reputation. To shake off the kind of reputation it garners, DataWind sets its focus now on India’s smartphone market. It aims to dominate this field of market.

DataWind launched three (perhaps revolutionary) smartphones recently. The PocketSurfer smartphones range from around 55-105 USD. This range is fashioned with 5-inch screens and they house Linux and Android operating systems. This medium price-range appeals to the price-sensitive Indian consumers. It is easily the cheapest smartphone there ever was in India.

PocketSurfer 5X

Of the three, PocketSurfer 5X is the abecedarian smartphone, the basic of them all. It runs on Linux OS. It is enhanced with an 5-inch WQVGA resistive touch screen display. The processor speed is 1GHz, powered by Cortex A8 processor. The battery promises life of 3 hours of talk time and 1 day of standby time. The other features consist of a VGA front-facing camera, Bluetooth, EDGE, micro SD and micro USB ports.

Secondly, the PocketSurfer 5 is for the Android fans who wouldn’t mind an older version of it. PocketSurfer 5 runs over Android v4.0 ICS with Wi-Fi, EDGE, Bluetooth, micro USB and SD. As with the 5X, it has a 5-inch WVGA touch screen display, but unline 5X, it’s garnished with capacitive touch. Going a step ahead, it has a 1GHz Cortex A9 processor. The battery life is improved in the way that it offers up to 2 hours of standby time. For capturing pictures, the phone has an 2-megapixel rear snapper accompanied by a VGA front-facing camera.

PocketSurfer 3G5

Finally, for the best among the three, the PocketSurfer 3G5 comes with an 5-inch WVGA capacitive touch screen display like the PocketSurfer 5 with the same EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB and SD slots. In addition, it has a speedy 3G connectivity and supports HD video and gaming experience. It is a treat for Android lovers as it is powered by Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. The processor consists of a dual-core Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz thereby making this model stand out from the other two. There is an 5-megapixel primary camera with VGA front-facing camera. This phone is claimed to deliver 4 hours of talk time and 2 days of standby time.

With the three models launched to appeal to the Indian consumers who advocate change and innovation, DataWind is sure to face a climb in the market.
