GeeksPhone: A Company that sells phones for geeks.
GeeksPhone is the first ever European company to launch an Android handset. The company is based in Spain and was founded in 2009 by Javier Auguera and Rodrigo Silva-Ramos.
GeeksPhone One
The GeeksPhone One is the first device in the GeeksPhone family and was a 1.6 Donut release. Later, the company worked on models that run FireFox OS – namely, Keon and the Peak. The handset was of very low specifications and was very bulky. The device featured 256MB RAM, a 3 point accelerometer, a 528MHz ARM11 processor, and a resistive touchscreen. The battery inside the device was a meagre 1110mAh running at 3.7V Li-Po. There were 5 hardware buttons present on the phone – back, home, menu and search plus the power button. These five buttons were exclusive of the volume rocker present at the sides. The device actually looked like a rendered version of an N97 which was the first ever phone to feature a 32GB storage option and no expandable storage.
GeeksPhone Revolution
The phone was in development for a long time and is now on sale. Its main selling point is the Dual OS boot-ability right out of the box which other manufacturers wouldn’t give right from the start. The main OS is Android and the Alternative OS can be anything. The default is B2G (Boot2Gecko) OS by Mozilla, though this can be changed. The specifications of the device are as follows- a 4.7″ IPS LCD Display, a dual core 1.6GHz Intel atom Processor, 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage which is expandable using micro SD card. There is a primary 8MP camera at the back and secondary camera is 1.3MP. The phone will be on sale for 222 Euros. The change between the OSes can take place by 1 tap OTA system. As the Firefox OS is quite new, it is expected to have some struggles. That should be fixed over updates and time.
The devices were the first to feature OS modification without the requirement of root and were not available though the major carriers like Verizon, EE, Vodafone, etc. It was a standalone phone much like how it used to be before.
