Tata Nano, Alto 800, Ford Figo and i10 failed in Safety – Global NCAP Test results

What do you think is the most important factor when you choose to buy a car? Is it the money? The features that are present in the car? The mileage? No. The most important thing that we need to look in a car is its safety features. How safe a car is! But the shocking news is, some small cars in India have failed safety tests conducted by Global NCAP.

Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) is a non-profit organization registered in the UK which aims to encourage worldwide availability of information about consumer vehicle safety. The company has found out that the Tata Nano, the Alto 800, the Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i10 and Ford Figo are found to be very unsafe for passengers. Don’t believe me? In the safety aspect, these cars have scored low ratings.

Indian car safety test

Ford Figo

NCAP performed a safety test on a non-airbag Ford Figo with a dummy, which crashed during a collide. During the test, the car was speeding at 64kmph and when collided, the dummy’s body crashed completely except the head. Finally, the car was awarded rating of 1 star out of 5.

Volkswagen Polo

The lower version of Polo did failed during the safety test. But the company soon realized the seriousness and pulled out the model to replace it with a dual airbag version. Well at the end, the model could score 2 star rating.

Maruti Alto 800

India’s best selling car has very great disadvantages in terms of technology and safety and I don’t know how this got in to the best selling position. Most of the manufacturers, especially Maruti neglects the safety part to reduce cost. The Alto 800 doesn’t feature airbags and a new version should come up with heavy safety measures. Ratings? Should i say?

Hyundai i10

The lowest variant of  i10 doesn’t come with airbags and a dummy crash reveals that this in fact is, one of the most dangerous car. I rather didn’t expect this from Hyundai.

Tata Nano

The Tata Nano is the lowest priced car in this segment. How? Because it has no airbags and no safety measures at all which gives it a zero rating. And of course, we are supposed to talk about cars isn’t? The nano is a share-auto like type of car which comes in various versions.

Here is a table to prove it:

Global NCAP also tested these models against UN’s basic crash test. Here are the results of it.

Are the airbag version of these cars are safe?

Not really! According to the reports from NCAP, Maruti Alto 800, Tata Nano, Hyundai i10 have structural weakness and even the airbag fitting will be of no use. The report says, these cars would bring serious injury and will risk your life when collided.
