Mirror, mirror on the wall, can you take selfies better than them all?

It’s awesome how technology develops, converting all lifeless objects into smart objects by embedding processors in them. It began from objects that did have processors but weren’t all that smart, eg. Watches to smart watches. It has stretched out to various other objects such as spectacles and lens. Now, it’s time to put smart mirrors into business.

Selfies everywhere!

The most used word in 2014 as predicted is ‘selfie’. Why is it so famous? Because you no longer need to rely on someone else to capture all your beautiful moments. But why do some people still refuse to take selfies? Oh, the awkwardness! Handling the camera, adjusting your posture, trying to cover everything in one picture, it’s just so cumbersome and messy.

Everyone in Facebook are like ‘Camera, why are you so bad to me? Mirror is always good to me!’ Looks like France-based PixGlass has taken this dialogue seriously. PixGlass works to integrate mirrors with camera and Wi-Fi technology to click the best pictures of yourself.

PixGlass? Why and how?

It all started from trial rooms. A thousand people take awkward selfies from trial rooms and send it across to ask their friends what suits them best. When the mirror itself can take beautiful pictures, why bother about awkward, inconvenient selfies? PixGlass uses mirror on one side of the glass and a hidden camera on the other. It looks like someone from behind you is taking the picture and that someone is invisible. Smart devices can connect with this smart mirror using Wi-Fi and the Pixglass app. This gives a complete functionality of the mirror-camera. This app provides the facility to share these pictures easily to friends and to save them.

How practical is this?

Considering the amount of labour it takes to make mirrors smart, it is not as feasible as other trending services that just require the installation of a single app. As these mirrors are usually placed for public use, security is of utmost importance. Also, the top concern is of privacy. One doesn’t simply enter a trial room that has a mirror-camera and be carefree. Technology can always be misused.

This technology is currently being developed in Paris. Let’s see how it evolves!
