What to do when you dropped your spendy Nokia Lumia 1020 in water?

You may have heard about people dropping their phones accidentally in water?  That too may be a cold one. But have you heard about a phone going for a hot wash? In that case, follow these steps given by Nokia and also from my own experience about how to regain all the data and make sure your phone is back to original condition.

What Nokia Says?

Here is an overview of what Nokia is saying. It comes in the form of a picture with all details, which Nokia is actually famous for giving. This can be humourous, but it might still work for a lot of people. If not, tough luck, wait for another day before taking it to the service center.

Nokia guide

The guide tells you ways on how to dry off the phone and get it working again. Here are the steps as the picture is not that clear:

  • Remove the phone from water if you have put it in accidentally but you should’ve done that as soon as possible. leaving it even for one minute can damage the phone permanently. And you should go to a Nokia Center soon enough.
  • Make sure you remove your SIM Card from the SIM Slot.
  • Dry the phone with a cloth and not with any tissue or toilet paper or a hair dryer for the worst case scenario. Don’t use a hair dryer as you will heat up the circuitry.
  • Leave the phone over night in a bag of warm rice and wake up to find the phone get up from a long sleep.
  • Try powering on the phone and if it works, its a medical miracle. Else, do we need to say?
  • If the phone powers on, first thing to do is back up the data.

Ways to power on the phone

  • Try pressing the power button alone, if you get a vibration, you are good to go.
  • If not, try pressing the Volume down and the power keys together.
  • Try pressing the volume down, power and the camera button to hard reset the device.
  • Try pressing all the keys in random.

My Experience with Lumia dropped in hot water

I soaked the device in extremely hot water (the one you use in washing clothes). I forgot I had the device in my pant pocket and put it up for washing (in a bucket, luckily). And after a minute, when I found out that my phone was missing, heavens have fallen and all hell broke loose. I rushed to the restroom to get the phone out of the bucket and my oh my, the phone was so hot.

I hurried and took a towel to wipe off the water coming out of the device. The device was still hot, even after half an hour. After half an hour, I got a symptom of the heat- the phone’s LED flash light was lit up the brightest but the Display and the capacitive buttons were not working. The capacitive buttons started flashing after a few minutes weakly and died off. The LED light also started fading off. And then… Darkess. No reaction at all from the phone. After a night of keeping it open to the atmosphere, charging it occasionally to see if it comes to life, all I can do is Wait and Pray.

Do not Attempt this at home unless you know what you are doing.

Lumia 1020 Disassembly

Lumia 1020 is built with unibody and so is therefore hard to remove. You have to follow strict procedures if you want to have to disassemble the phone to see which parts are affected. Techglimpse though recommends taking your phone to the service center. They will be experts in that as it is their job. But if you are very much interested, Here is a video of the same.
