Project Morpheus: A Virtual Reality System for the PS4 by Sony [GDC 2014]
What is a virtual reality system? The two words form an oxy-moron as they are two opposite traits. Like, lets say hard and soft (or) cruel kindness? A Virtual Reality system actually helps you in going in to the game. Something really like the science-fiction movies we have seen so far!
This system by Sony consists of 60 virtual speakers and a screen covering you eyes and it is so real that you will feel that you are so into it! That, you are playing the protagonist or antagonist of the game. The Morpheus was shown in the GDC 2o14 as a prototype and was three years of hard work by Sony. It takes the Oculus Rift, a heads-on which was actually the first Virtual reality system. The specifications of the device are as follows-
- Display: 1920×1080 pixels
- Resolution per eye: 960×1080
- Field of View: 90 degrees
- Type of display: LCD
- No. of speakers: 60 virtual
- Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
- Frequency: 1000Hz
- Video In: HDMI
- Video Out: 1
- USB 2.0: 1
- Headphone Output: 1
The screen is a little blurrier than the Oculus Rift and looks like you are looking at a screen. The VR system wants to provide an immense experience as it has tracking camera all around the device and not just in the front and at the sides as is the case with Oculus. There is also another VR system that was introduced namely Crystal Cove, but in CES 2014. The headset was easy to wear and blocks out light completely. And putting it on would also make you look cool.
For now, the headset will be connected to the PS4 via the help of a 5m long cable and eventually, the headset would become wireless and supported up to a range of about 10 metres or 33 feet. both the companies be it Oculus or Sony have started making things about Virtual Reality. This was the field I was more excited in, and wanted to be inside a game when I was little. Now, little by little, we are getting close to that dream. It will take a few years unless the finalized products arrive and when everyone will be busy being inside their games than being inside their bodies and having fun with friends. That is the only thing I fear being bad about this whole Virtual Reality thing. Otherwise, it is a very awesome concept. Do you agree?!
