Dell Studio 1555 Review – A superb laptop!

Dell produces some amazing laptops and one such thing I particularly like and own is the Studio series laptop. For those who ask for a laptop which can handle hard and extreme conditions, I would recommend the Studio 15 laptops. But unfortunately, Dell has stopped the production of Studio laptops and is promoting its Inspiron and Alienware series. For those of you who own a Studio, a very good day brothers/sisters, and for those who don’t bad luck friends.

This review is very much late and the laptop is quite old. “Old is gold” as the old proverb goes. I got to know the meaning and the deepest roots just today. It is not like wine which tastes better when it ages. It is like the old products are much more reliable, more sturdy and more productivity enhanced than the newest models. This is what is compared to Gold, the precious and valuable metal.

Here are the details of the specs that come preinstalled in the Studio 1555- Factory specs:

  • 15.6″ Full HD display
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 320GB Hard Disk space.
  • Intel Centrino Processor with 64 bit architecture.
  • 4GB RAM
  • 1GB Graphics Memory.
  • ATI Radeon HD Graphics Card.
  • VGA Webcam

OS

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 as soon as possible. I tried the developer version, the preview version and also the final release version. The computer performed without any lag. There was no loss in files as well. The 64 bit architecture changed to 32 bit but that was not a big deal. VMWare to the rescue. I installed Windows 8 Pro with 64 bit processing to help with my Visual Studio installation. Microsoft then released a free upgrade to the WMC edition by offering a free product key. So, I availed this offer and installed Windows 8 Pro with WMC. Then came along Windows 8.1 which was available as a free download. It included many personalization features and some changed performance and bug fixes. It merged the search bar to search everywhere now. The laptop is still not lagging and performs very smoothly and the battery life is extended after Windows 8.1 installation. Windows and Dell merge together and are an unbeatable duo.

Hardware

The laptop comes with SRS Premium sound that helps increase your experience with Audio which is similar to Dolby. The F* series keys (*- 1-12) can be accessed by pressing Fn button. Otherwise, they perform other functions like increasing and decreasing the volume. I opted for Core 2 Duo processor which is still faster. The keyboard is quite amazing and the feeling of the buttons is extra ordinary. The keyboard is back lit and the back lighting is quite elegant. The webcam although a VGA one can perform like a 2MP camera. The quality of the images are amazing and is very much suitable for video calls.

Issues

The one main issue that I have with this laptop is the hinge problem as the service center defines it. The hinges that are present in the display cover tend to come out sooner and reduces the sexiness of the laptop.  The outer cover can be replaced and something more of your tastes can be put in place instead of the old and boring design. The plastic covering of the display also breaks easier and comes out.

Dell surely released a great product. Support is still available and the laptop sure is amazing and I wont replace this laptop for anything else. Dell, the power to do more. Indeed.
