This Video shows Why Women cannot Walk alone on the Streets of NYC!

Could you imagine the kind of comments that pass by when a women walks alone on the streets of New York City? That too a young woman wearing a jeans and crewneck t-shirt? You probably know what I’m talking about and it’s about a viral video “10 hours of walking in NYC as Woman“, in which a young woman Shoshana B Roberts (an actress; neither a social activist nor a Hollaback employee) was verbally harassed by at least 100 men and watched by 6 million people in the streets of Manhattan.

The video was shot by Rob Bliss, the creator who walked with a hidden camera few feets in front of Roberts. The video featured Roberts holding two microphones in her hand and walking silently through the streets for 10 hours and then you see the mens shouting at her, whistling, allegedly trying to involve in a conversation, nice, too ugly for you, don’t you smile etc…and when they don’t get any response, shouted at her angrily.

The concept was created for a non-profit organization called Hollaback, which aimed to collect donations to help end street harassment. The minutes after the video was uploaded on YouTube, the comments started to flood…few appreciated the concept and the effort to stop street harassment, few yelled as too sensitive and few threatened to rape or kill Roberts.

The comments from the men on the streets were “nasty,” Bliss said. “The same disrespect she faced in this video is now being echoed in the real world. I support her 100%.” The creator also removed offensive comments in the youtube page and requested others to report.

I read few comments in YouTube – where most of the opinions were against the video; such as “The ultimate aim – at the end of the video, Hollaback wants money”.

Some comments read in the video were  “How are you doing today?“, How are you this morning?, What’s up beautiful have a good day? Have a nice evening, God bless you etc…Are these comments harmful? Aren’t they meant to acknowledge that she’s beautiful? Where’s a harassment here? A 10 hours of video contains 2 minutes of harassing comments (and most of those does not fall within the harassment braces). So, what’s the motive of this video? I don’t understand, do you at least?

Will you donate to stand against harassment or it is just another video aims to collect some donations?
