What is Black Friday or Cyber Monday ? Check out to know more.
There are wholesale weeks happening in and around America and Europe in which electronic gadgets and other things get sold off at discounted prices. These are mainly done for products which are otherwise heavily priced and do not move off the shelf that easily. There are four different terms used- Black Thursday, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Cyber Tuesday.
Black Friday
Black Friday was the term that is very popular and the rest of the terms were invented to go with the Black Friday. The origin of the term has a rather interesting story behind it and was used in an entirely different context. Black generally refers to a term which has a deeper and a more negative root and that was the case as in naming the Friday. The term Black Friday was invented in the 19th century where it was associated with the financial crisis of 1869. In the US, the first time the term was used was on 24 September 1869, when two speculators, Jay Gould and James Fisk, tried to corner the gold market on the New York Stock Exchange. When the government stepped in to correct the distortion by flooding the market with gold, prices plummeted and many investors lost sizable fortunes. The earliest known invocation of Black Friday to refer to the day after Thanksgiving was made in a public relation newsletter in 1961 and is from Philadelphia. The phrase ‘Black Friday’ remained a Philadelphia quirk for a surprisingly long time and didn’t become a national term until the 1990s.
Cyber Monday
Following Black Friday, Shop.org named an another term called Cyber Monday which tells us about shoppers who couldn’t shop during the Black Friday and the weekends and were rather buying on a Monday. More electronic gadgets are sold during this day. That is why the term Cyber.
Black Thursday
Mostly, Thanksgiving day was to be on fourth Thursday of November but a peculiar thing happened in 1939. President Frank D Roosevelt broke with the tradition as November that year had five Thursday rather than the common four. So he declared the fourth Thursday as the Thanksgiving day. So merchants had to do the preparations a week earlier. Recently, retailers have planned on increasing the sales and reducing or giving heavy discounts on Thanksgiving day itself and this is known as the Black Thursday.
Cyber Tuesday
If the sales happen on a Tuesday after the Black Friday, it is called the Cyber Tuesday.
