LG 480Hz LCD TV Panel will be demonstrated at CES, Jan 2009
LG is going to unveil its 480-Hz LCD TV Panel at the Consumer Electronics Show(CES) January, 2009. The “Trumotion 480Hz” is a first for the industry, which has begun selling 120-Hz LCD TVs in volume. LG would be shipping this 480-Hz LCD TV Panel as a product after Mar 2009.
LG’s new display also can make dark images even darker and bright images brighter by turning off the backlight for longer periods, essentially dimming the display. The scanning backlight turns on and off rapidly, allowing the display to refresh 480 times per second. The display’s motion picture response time is 4 ms, the company has said.
The earlier LCD’s refresh at 60Hz, traditionally displaying 30 frames/per second, with each frame consisting of 2 video fields:60 Hz.The problem occurs when viewing movies, which traditionally are encoded at 24 frames per second. If the 24 frames/s movie was shown at 30 frames per second, the movie would end up being sped up by about 1.25 times normal speed. To prevent this, the TV actually plays back each movie frame three times in succession, and every other frame twice in succession, a technique known as 3:2 pull-down.
Eddie Yeo, executive vice president and head of LG’s Display TV Business Unit said: “The world’s first Trumotion 480Hz LCD TV panel is planned to hit the market in the second half of 2009. LG display will provide its customers with unique, high-end products while delivering crisp picture quality for fast moving images”.
