Windows Phone Update 3 rolling out globally to Lumia 1020 and 925

Rejoice 1020 and 925 users. The Update 3 or GDR 3 (General distribution release) is now seeding globally to all the 1020’s and the 925’s. The rest of the Lumias are set to follow up. The schedule is going as planned. Nokia and Microsoft were to release the update in January 2014 and the update starts hitting worldwide today morning.

The update brings with it three Microsoft updates and one Nokia update (for the Lumia). The Update 3 brings with it a lot of features.

Some of the Nokia Lumia update features include :

  • App Switcher: The app switcher can be accessed by pressing and holding the back button. The App switcher now features a big X close button which can shut down the app. The app moves to the bottom of the screen and off the screen. There is also a label present below the cards which tell what app it is.

  • Driving Mode: Driving mode allows you to disable all types of notifications when connected to a particular in-car Bluetooth device. All notifications are disabled except calls and texts which can also be disabled if you want to.
  • Screen lock: This was a much sought feature. This feature locks the screen to particular orientation. Be it landscape or portrait. Landscape mode will be locked in if you turn auto rotation off in the landscape mode and will not revert to portrait mode like the Androids.
  • Glance screen: The glance screen has color changes and include the Blue and green color in Night mode. It also includes notifications for which you don’t have to turn on the display.
  • Camera improvements: There are many camera improvements, especially for the 1020. They include new digital algorithm processing. There is also a new format- DNG (Digital Negative Graphics) which can help pros to print photos directly from their phones.
  • Management system: The phone now uses a new storage management system in which you can now delete temporary files and gives an in-depth detail on how the phone memory is used.
  • Folders: Now apps can be arranged into folders but the thing is. It is available as an app-App folder. The app helps in doing the same and its roots are very deep and go deep in to the kernel. It is available exclusively for Lumia devices only.
  • And much more improvements under the hood.

Head on to nokia site to see if the update is available. AT&T and other carriers started to seed the update a month ago. The international update has just now started. If your update has not arrived, you have to wait a bit longer. Samsung ATIV and HTC WP8 phones are to also get the update without the Nokia Black. Check your device for more.
