BitTorrent introduces BitTorent Bundle to monetize its file-distribution platform
Torrents have been the best way to distribute files so far. But until now, the monetization has been a hard part. But to beat this, BitTorrent on Tuesday announced a new type of preliminary media format called the “BitTorrent Bundle”. The company has also launched an alpha build with the partnership of music label Ultra Music.
This BitTorrent Bundle would let content owners charge for some files within a torrent.
“The strategy here is to give content creators the tools to publish into the ecosystem on their own,” said Christian Averill, BitTorrent’s director of communications. “We’re creating a new kind of torrent, the gated torrent, and the idea is that this will be pervasive once it gets out there.”
The Bundle Alpha will work like other torrents. The front gate will have the free content. “Then there’s the gate. In this case, it’s an e-mail gate. This is important so that you can promote later to your audience. The gate can be a paywall, or anything. It’s really going to be up to the partners”, Averill said. As an example – half the content is free (the Dada Life remix of Dynasty and the Freaks of Nature tour trailer) and the other half is a content you can unlock using your email (unreleased footage from Kaskade’s Staples Center show in 2012 and an exclusive digital tour booklet).
Reports state that BitTorrent conducted 29 Bundle experiments with 170 million downloads, before introducing gate for the Kaskade Bundle. But the Kaskade download is just an example and BitTorrent doesn’t plan on stopping there. Hopingly, BitTorrent Bundle will revolutionize the potential of how entertainers get their content to consumers!
