Now you can share internet connection with your friend living in a different country

Are you allowed to access internet the same way like your friend living in a different country? If you are a netizen from China, then the country had defined certain policies to control the Internet. It’s the same case around the world, where each country has their own access control lists that defines what their citizens can have access to. Well, these are the limitations if you are using internet connection from your own country. How about sharing your friend’s internet connection who lives in Germany or Iran?

Google wants to provide one such tool called “uProxy”; an easy to use, peer to peer gateway to the open Internet. Once the tool is installed, the user from India can use friend’s internet to connect with him or her. The company announced uProxy during Google Ideas Summit in New York, but it is yet to be released for the public use.

Google's uProxy for Internet Sharing

“The reason it is closed source at the moment, the reason we’re not open sourcing it right now, is exactly that we don’t want people to start using it before, actually, it’s safe and secure,” told Lucas Dixon, engineer at Google Ideas. Lucas said, it is nothing but a personalized Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Once uProxy is ready, the tool will be made available as browser extensions. Mostly for the Google Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Do you wonder how uProxy will make this sharing happen? For instance, an user from India can request his or her friend in London via chat to initiate uProxy. When the London user launches the extension, the user in India will receive an invitation as notification. Once the invitation is accepted, the user will be connected to the internet via the secure channel through friend’s internet connection in London.

How cool is that? We’ll keep you updated about the tool in coming days.
