Angelina Jolie undergoes double Mastectomy to prevent cancer

The leading actress Angelina Jolie revealed about her double mastectomy treatment to prevent the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. According to her interview to New York Times op-ed article, she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after her doctors hinted 87 percent risk of breast cancer and 50 percent of ovarian cancer. The report says, Angelina was carrying a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which might increase the risk of developing the above told cancers. It’s also to be noted that Angelina’s mother Marcheline Bertrand was died in 2007 when she was at the age of 56 due to ovarian cancer.

Mastectomy is a medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely. Angelina has underwent three months of treatment at the Pink Lotus Breast Center in California on April 24, which included mastectomies and reconstruction.

She also told, the decision was not easy, but happy to have sensed the issue upfront.  “I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made,” Jolie wrote. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent.”, Jolie told in an interview.
