New Year 2013 celebrations stampede kills over 60 in Abidjan,Ivory Coast

At least 60 people have been crushed to death and some 250 injured during new year festivities in Ivory Coast’s main city Abidjan, near a stadium in the central Plateau area of the city where a fireworks display was held.

The cause of the stampede stands unclear. Rescue officials say that the victims included many children.

“There are around 60 dead, and about 200 injured, this is a provisional estimate,” a rescue official told Reuters news agency.
