Japan is working on Magnetic, floating train ‘Maglev’ which could run at 500 kph
The Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) unveiled a prototype of front car of its Series L0 first-generation high-speed magnetic levitation train for commercial service at TSURU, Yamanashi Prefecture. The front car – 28 meters long, 2.9 meters wide and 3.1 meters tall, has a 15-meter-long nose and 24 seats.
The carriages contain four seats abreast; the end car can accommodate 24 passengers, while other cars will hold 68. A 16-car maglev train can carry up to 1,000 passengers and can run at a maximum speed of about 500 kph.
“Through the test runs, we’ll make final checks to ensure comfortable rides in the commercial services,” said Yasukazu Endo, chief of JR Tokai’s maglev experiment center in Tsuru.

Plans are to extend the test line at the facility to 42.8 kilometers from the current 18.4 kilometers and begin five-car test runs of the maglev train. JR Tokai plans to launch its maglev train services between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Nagoya Station in Aichi Prefecture in 2027 and expend the service to Osaka by 2045.
