Volvo unveils world’s first Cyclist detection system! [GenevaAutoShow 2013]

Volvo is stepping-up to the next pace! We are aware that Volvo has pedestrian detection system, which watches the road ahead of the vehicle employs auto-brake in case of a positive detection. Now, it is adding one more safety feature. Dubbed “Cyclist Detection with full auto brake,” the feature is designed to work alongside the already available Pedestrian Detection system.

Cyclist Detection uses the same sensors used for Pedestrian Detection (grille-mounted radar and a windshield-mounted video camera) and works similarly. If a cyclist heads the Volvo in front or in the same direction, as the car approaches from the rear, the system will warn the driver and also employ auto-brake and bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Although this works fruitfully only when both the radar sensor and video camera confirm the presence of a  cyclist, it could surely slow down the number of cyclists’ deaths that occur because of collision with a car

All new Volvo models are expected to be  fitted Cyclist Detection starting in mid-May. There is no update as of now about the American market.`
