Take a trip to the Middle-earth with this Chrome Experiment!

I have always loved Google Experiments, and this time too! Google has launched a Chrome Experiment today that would take you to Hobbit’s world.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is an interactive guided tour to the Middle-earth that has wizards, people, trolls, elves and other beasts.  It was developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

The narrated tour has a  zoom-able 3D map of Middle-earth with three locations (with more to follow in coming weeks). You can choose between spots (Trollshaw Forest, Rivendell and Dol Guldur) and explore the locations and characters from the movie trilogy. The background music is soothing too.

And I am impressed with the overall experience! Obviously this whole initiative is to promote The Hobbit sequel that is to come out in December! But, it is interesting that the immersive 3D graphics in “Journey through Middle-earth” was built with CSS3 and WebGL which could run on your mobile, laptop or tablet with high-end graphics cards and bring wonderful 3D experience on devices with rich audio effects and sound manipulation through the Web Audio API.

Can’t wait more? Here is the link to your Middle-earth, but after the video!
