A Magic Finger prototype converts any surface into a touch interface
Just attaching a small ring to your finger can turn any surface into a touch interface and that can let you control your smartphone or a computer. This prototype device is jointly developed by Autodesk Research, the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. The device consists of two sensors, low resolution, high speed sensor that tracks movement. The Magic Finger features a high resolution camera that helps to detect 32 different surfaces textures that too at a accuracy of 98%.
The Magic finger can be programmed to control your smartphone. For instance, a ringing smartphone can be put on silence just by touching or swiping your watch. Touch your shirt button to send a saved message, program pinch commands and other gestures for tablet or computer control without the need to touch the device.
The Magic Finger can automatically detect the textures like “QR codes” and download the information. In future the device is expected to fit in a ring.
