What I learnt from Tizen DevLab Workshop in Bangalore

On 16th November 2013, Tizen DevLab workshop was organized under Samsung Developer Program in Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), India. The event was arranged in Vodafone India Services Pvt. Ltd (by Mr. Bala and Mr. Chandu), who is one of the carrier partner with Samsung. The program was targeted towards mobile application developers to enable them build applications on Tizen operating system. For those who missed the event, here’s the recap of the program.

The event started in the morning at 10AM with an introduction of the speakers. There were three speakers from Samsung Developer Team;Mr.Kumar (Senior developer with 12 years experience), Mr. Yuvaraj and Mr. Nikhil. Interestingly, there were around 60+ attendees (from 121 registrations) from various Industries such as TCS, SAP Labs, Value Labs, ClearTrip, HP, CISCO, Bosch, CTS, IBM, Accenture, Mind dots, Exoys, Mindtree, TechTree and few freelancers.

Tizen Overview – Mr. Kumar

Mr. Kumar, the senior developer at Samsung gave an overview of Tizen mobile OS.

Tizen is an open source operating system that gained support from leading mobile carriers such as Vodafone, Orange, SK Telecom, Sprint, NTT Docomo and KT. Also the OS is supported by various device manufactures – Samsung, Panasonic, Huwaei, Fujitsu, Intel and NEC. The most interesting part of the operating system is, it supports variety of device profiles such as mobile phones, smart TVs, In-vehicle infotainment, Tablets, netbooks, cameras and other home appliances like Refrigerators and Washing machines.

He also spoke about, Tizen Ecosystem which comprises of Device platform, Developer Support and App Store. The developer platform includes SDK, Developer challenge programs and device store client.

Kumar said, the Tizen platform scores big in supporting HTML5, according to html5test.com. He also told about the Types of applications supported such Web based applications, Native and Hybrid applications. Other slides spoke about the evolution of Tizen starting from its first version in April 2012, 2.01 in Feb 2013, 2.1 in May 2013, 2.2 in July 2013 and 2.2.1 the current version in November 2013.

Tizen is based on Linux operating system, which runs on Kernel 2.6.36 and the support extended to Kernel 3.0 as well.

Creating applications with Tizen SDK

Mr. Yuvaraj, the software developer at Samsung spoke about Application Life cycle, Scene management, Sample applications (Dynamic box features, Frames etc…).

The presentation was then concluded by Mr. Nikhil, developer at Samsung. He spoke about the graphics and animation support in Tizen Platform.

Oh! Finally I did get a chance to glimpse the Samsung smartphone running Tizen OS. Here are the few snapshots of the device.
