Wikipedia goes Blackout to protest U.S. Congress – the SOPA
For over the years, thousands of hours and enormous knowledge sharing had been put together to build the largest encyclopedia in human history. But today, the knowledge base goes dark. Wikipedia will be in the dark for 24 hours to protest against the US congress – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — and to bring out an awareness and encourage its readers to join hands against it.
The blackout is for 24 hours — from midnight to midnight EST (05:00 UTC Wed to 05:00 UTC Thu). The blackout decision was made by Wikipedia’s global community of editors — the people who developed Wikipedia.
Now, the trick to view the Wikipedia on a Blackout day.
The Wikipedia goes Blackout only for its English version. It will be accessible on handheld devices like mobile phones and smart phones. The reason behind this is, the protest message is prompted by a JavaScript. Also disabling the JavaScript in your browser, can still allow you to view Wikipedia.
Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge!. Now tell us, do you support the protest against SOPA?
