BlackBerry was a fruit for a long time. But what now comes to mind when we say BlackBerry? It is the mobile phone manufacturing company formerly known as Research In motion or RIM limited. or now known as BlackBerry Limited. The world would have been better when Apple and BlackBerry were just fruits – as the popular troll goes. But it feels like BlackBerry will go back into being a fruit after all ( no offence intended blackBerry).
Now, BlackBerry has many outlets I Suppose. There is also a suit company by the same name. People really get confused as to which BlackBerry is which. The first phone that BlackBerry released was a pager in 1999. The OS is also called BlackBerry OS. The name doesn’t sound appealing. Maybe BlackBerry should have changed its OS name and give it a codename like Android or give a uber cool name like Nokia to its OS updates. (referring to the Bittersweet shimmer codename).
BB OS 1.0
This is a discontinued version of the OS and it was released long back. It was released in 1999 for the pager 580. The features of this were very less and the main objective was communication and that was achieved.
BB OS 3.6
The BlackBerry OS saw many years in development and the version it came up with next was 3.6. This was released for the 5810 Smartphone.
BB OS 5.0
The BB OS 5.0 was released and saw many features and lot of new technologies. It was mainly released for the Bold range of Smartphones. This release should’ve seen the introduction of the popular BBM messenger.
BB OS 6.0
The OS 6.0 was an improvement over the OS 5.0. The features include:
* See all of your social and RSS feeds in one place. Type an update once and send it to one, all or select networks.
* Web Browser- Pages load quickly, and there’s tabbed browsing so you can have multiple web pages open at once.
* Universal Search- You can search everything on your smartphone at once—and even reach out to the web too.
* Multimedia- Get a streamlined experience with album art, new camera modes, sharing, a built-in YouTube app and more.
BB OS 7.0
BlackBerry announced that earlier devices cannot be updated to the 7.0 update. The 7 series update was the most favorite of all and when devices such as the Bold, Curve, the Storm were released with the Enterprise people also in Mind and with the development of BBM service in which messages were free to other BB users. A unique PIN was generated and you have to give that to the other user for them to join you and have endless free conversation. This saw the rise of other apps such as WhatsApp, etc. which use the internet to send you message internationally as well.
BB OS 10
This is the latest offering from BlackBerry and devices such as Z10, Z30, Q10 were released. This was personally designed keeping touch in mind. I don’t know what BlackBerry was thinking while doing this. Whether it was to compete with Android or iOS keeping in mind that they support touch screens, but this was in fact a big failure and made the company to run in losses. The company has decided to sell its BBM licensing and try other marketing gimmicks but only God should pave the way.
Instead of seeking improvements over BB OS 10. They should drop the project all in all and start developing for more 7.2 devices which have advanced notification center, a ringtone setter,etc. which coupled with a personal voice assistant having a hot voice should keep men toppled head over heels.!!!
