Google Reader is retiring on July 1st!

Updated on March 14, 2013

Oops! Its spring cleaning for Google and this time there is a big list too! One thing that is going to make us real sad is the shutdown of Google Reader.

Google Reader was launched  in 2005. Although Google Reader never made it as a mainstream product, it still gave comfort to niche crowd, where Google Reader was one of the favorite apps of all time!  Reader has gone through a number of changes, but it wasn’t significantly updated for long time now. The last update for the product was the built in integration for Google+!

Google says it is killing Reader since, “usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products.”

The removal Reader’s own native sharing service, would cause a bit of a backlash with its die hard users. Maybe it would be the doom of the RSS protocol itself, which has lost its  popularity since the rise of social sharing services.

Google is offering users a way to export their Reader content via Google Takeout, along lists of users that they follow, starred, liked and shared articles.  The users can get the downloads and find a alternative for Google Reader to export all feeds and put them into a new reader. Only four months left for July 1, 2013!
