Umbrella Here, an Interesting Smart Umbrella makes you pray for Rain 24/7!

Updated on September 1, 2017

Our generation was lucky enough to see smartphone, smart watch and even smart cooker. The next new smart thing is an umbrella. You might expect that this umbrella automatically detects rain, or changes shape automatically or even appears out of thin air when it rains. But no, none of those. The smart umbrella concept was developed in Hong Kong – called as Umbrella Here.

What does this smart umbrella do then? Well, it helps you threefold. Firstly, to socialize. Secondly, to benefit someone. Thirdly, feel good about extending some selfless help.

What?! How?! I think this project has recognized the fact that people these days do not as much as smile at strangers on the road, let alone help them when they seem to be troubled. Kindness has reduced manifold. With everyone bending down into their busy virtual digital world, no one has time to say a few kind words in person, or rather, they have forgotten and this project is about stirring it up.

The umbrella lights up whenever the owner decides to share the umbrella. Thereby, it helps people who do not have umbrellas. As the owners extend help, they also meet a new person, who could be more interesting than you thought!

Okay, sounds interesting. But still, how?!

Here’s how. A doughnut shaped device enhanced with Bluetooth technology can be fitted on top of your favorite umbrella. So, basically, you do not need to buy a special new umbrella and stick on to your taste! This device that stays on top of your umbrella is furnished with coloured LED lights and connected to your phone by a companion app. Users can use this app to turn on the LED light to tell the others stuck in the rain without an umbrella that you are ready to lend some help by sharing your umbrella.

Anything else?

Yes, this device does more than just switching on LED light. It can track routes that you have treaded using the smart umbrella and stores the logs of these trips. You can also keep track of how many times you have shared your umbrella, giving you a beautiful feeling inside every time you look at the number. If the stranger with whom you are sharing the umbrella is also using the companion app, yet has no umbrella at that time unfortunately, you can share the umbrella now and later keep in touch with each other now that you can type in the location and time you have shared the umbrella and find each other. Continuing conversations online with the app thereafter yields to stronger friendship. What do we know can come out of that!

I am still not finished with the functionality of the doughnut device. When you detach it from the umbrella, it can be used as a weather tracker which displays colours such as red and blue based on whether (warm or cold). It also blinks when it is raining. Using the GPS technology, you can even track your umbrella if you have lost it or left it behind somewhere with the app.

Here’s a video to demonstrate all of that and it shows why this idea is good karma breeding :

With such an interesting umbrella, all you can pray is for rain 24/7!
