Another Open source Operating system like Android – Jolla

Updated on September 1, 2017

Jolla is an OS created by Ex-Nokia employees through the Nokia Bridge program which supports employees to start their own business after they leave the company. The program gives a fund of about 250000 Euros which should be quite enough to start your own business.

Jolla’s Sailfish is an Open source system like Android. And is also compatible with Android apps with the Yandex store. The interface is pretty much like the N9 which ran on MeeGo. MeeGo was a collaboration between Nokia and Intel. But Jolla is purely Ex-Nokia. MeeGo was short-lived and was dead as soon as it was born. But this shouldn’t be like that. The development and fabrication of the phone took a long time since the project was started. The phone is rather great and brings with it features not much like smartphones but it is enough for a beginning. The finish of the phone is quite amazing and brings with a cover called the “Other half” which fits on to the phone and also can change the theme of the phone much similar to the Nokia N79 which could change its color depending on the back cover. I still wonder how that is possible. Nokia can bring technologies of the future in the past itself. The way it didn’t change itself and being consistent was its problem.

Well, anyway, here are the specifications of the phone.

  • A display resolution of 540×960 pixels, 4″ screen leading to pixel density of 245 ppi.
  • IPS LCD Touchscreen with support for 16 million colors.
  • Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.4GHz dual core.
  • 16GB Internal memory expandable up to 64GB with external microSD card.
  • Micro SIM support.
  • 8MP primary camera with LED flash, auto focus, geo tagging and face detection.
  • Android app compatibility through Yandex store.
  • Connectivity features include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0,  NFC and USB 2.0
  • 2100mAh Battery.

The full touch based gesture of the phone is pretty cool and it has no other competition out there to match the touch based gesture. The N9 also did a pretty good job and was unique in every way possible. The N9 could also be upgraded to Jolla and the development team is working on that. If that happens, it would be very cool and there would be nothing out there to beat the N9. many of the features are borrowed from N9 and one of them include the card based multitasking which supports up to 9 screens. If a activity is not active, it gets suspended to the background and can be brought to active if it is in the forefront. Here are some pics.

Jolla has a long way to go. And only time can guide the lad.
