How to change the attachment icon to the kind of attachment an email has in Gmail?

Updated on September 1, 2017

If you are a GMail user, then you might have noticed a paper clip icon being displayed for the mails that has an attachment. Though the concept is great to know that the mail has a file attached to it, but somehow i feel, displaying the File Type icon instead of  a paper clip ((PDF icon for a PDF attachement and Doc icon for word documents) would have been more meaningful. This tutorial will expain how this can be done.

The Chrome extension called “Attachment Icons for GMail”, will change the paper clip icon to the relevant File type icon.

1. Go to Chrome web store to download and install the “Attachment Icons for GMail” extension.

2. After the successful installation of the extension, the paper clip icon will be changed to the File type icon as shown in the below screenshot.

You see the default paper clip icon changed to the relevant file type icon.

Now you can easily identify what kind of attachment an email has directly from your inbox.
