Definitive Guide to Android Safe Mode for Your Smartphone

Updated on September 1, 2017

Android has evolved to be a stable operating system, at least it doesn’t often freeze or forcefully close applications these days. But still there are devices that run older version of Android and there are plenty of applications developed with bugs, incompatibility to the device firmware and any other issues that might lead to above said problems. What’s worse here’s, certain applications might drain your battery to hell or even put the device into some serious booting problems. Well, nothing so serious as told, because Android comes with Safe mode. In the past, we learnt how to hard reset your Android device.

What is Android Safe Mode?

Android’s Safe mode is something similar to the one you see in Windows operating system. The safe mode boots the device with only required configurations, apps, system partitions and widgets, so that you can easily locate source of the problem and fix it. Most of the problems that arise on Android are due to the third party applications. Safe mode prevents those third party applications from loading and allows you to identify if the problem was due to any application or not.

Have I booted my device in Safe Mode? How will I identify it?

That’s quite simple. Soon your device is booted into Safe mode, you will see a text as “Safe Mode” at the bottom left corner of the display. Remember, the text will be seen on all screens you navigate and will prevent you from starting any third party application.

How to put the device in Safe Mode?

Unfortunately there is no common way to do that. It means, each device comes with different button combinations to start the device in safe mode. For instance, if you see the comments in our previous article about “How to reset Android phone or tablet when it is not booting?“, probably you’ll understand that there is no standard way to boot the device in Safe mode or hard reset.

Below are the certain hints that might work on your device while booting,

* Try press and hold both the volume keys.

* Press and hold the menu key

* For devices with capacitive buttons, hold the menu key while the LED underneath lights up, release it when LED turns off and then again press and hold when it lights up again.
