A month away from New Year, many us would be trying to loose some extra flab to get into that spanking new dress you would be buying (or, have already bought). Then, there must be guys out there who are trying to get leaner in a month or so. In an era, where gym is a temple for all (now, how frequently you visit it is a topic for another day) and Zumba and cross fitness classes are the trendiest way to stay fit, food is to us what fire is to oil-inequitably COMBUSTIBLE . Meaning, you see food and you want to gulp (yes, gulp!) it down in a go.
One doesn’t need to be a fitness freak to go on a diet. We all have had those days when we promise ourselves to go on a diet, cutting down on rice and other vices. But, I for one cannot run from my crave for food and I marvel at the sight of a steely resolve. Like, how can one drool at the sight of a piping hot pizza and not have it. And then, for those who live in India, the hospitality and diverse platter available make dieting equally difficult. While, you have to work your way out of the hospitality, I would give your a cheat sheet to feed your cravings. Here’s the 10 simple things you can eat instead
Rice -> Quinoa (or, Nachni)
Go to the nearest retail and get Quinoa to kill the ‘I want rice’ germs in your tummy. If you would rather have something which is locally available, try ‘Nachni’.
Sliced Bread -> Pita Bread
Sandwiches are a witch with yummy tasting loaves of bread on both sides. While on a diet, switch to Pita bread. These are easily available in retail stores these days with the growing number of Italian eateries in town.
Potatoes-> Cauliflower (or, raw banana)
Ask your mother what does she do when she is running short of potatoes , she would tell you she opts for raw bananas or cauliflowers instead. Mashed cauliflowers are much healthier than mashed potatoes. And, replacing raw bananas instead of potato cubes in your food is a healthy way to eat.
White paper Dosa -> Raagi dosa
Why eat it when you are on a diet? You know it is made of rice, you know the oil which it absorbs, don’t go down that road, eat Raagi dosa-a healthy alternative. You’ll find it tasty in time.
Curry -> Lentil
We know the curry saga. The tasty, vicious looking curry with heavenly spices and ever floating oil droplets. Switch to lentil, that is, ‘masur’. It is tasty, filling and can be cooked in various alternative ways, meaning, it is not boring.
Beverages -> Green tea
I don’t even have to tell you that. It is the hottest thing in the market right now. Apart from dermatological benefits and other health benefits, it is a good substitute for tea and coffee. And yeah, don’t dump a spoonful of sugar in it before sipping on it,remember you’re on a diet.
Butter -> Peanut butter
Yes, researchers now say peanut butter has the ability to help one lose fat. So, lick away.
Oil -> Olive
This one is quite cliched but is very true. Switch to olive and enjoy the health benefits imparted by it.
Mayo -> Apple Cider Vinegar
If you are salading it to lose weight, then dress your salad with apple cider vinegar and yeah, dab it on your pimple or drink it diluted with water on an empty stomach and look like a celeb in just over a month’s time.
Sweet -> Honey
We all have those sweet craving days. On days like these, keep a jar of honey at hand as it definitely has the goodness of fat burning ingredients. Don’t trust me, ask you granny!
All said and done, while you are dieting, keep this in mind-you are just a human. Eat healthy and small meals at regular intervals and EXERCISE! May you shine like a diamond at the New Year’s eve party.
