Smart Stay is one of the awesome feature in Samsung Galaxy devices. Smart Stay with the help of front facing camera will keep track of the user eyes to determine when to put off the device display. The feature will keep the display on when the user eyes are on the screen, and then decides to turn it Off when the user looks away from display. This is quite an useful feature, because it stops display from turning off while you are watching movie and turns it off when you are no more interested in looking at the screen, thus saving the battery.
But what’s disappointing for the non-galaxy owners is, the Smart Stay is a sole property of Galaxy brand devices and it is not available on other Android devices. But fortunately, we came across an app called “Smart Stay Ex” that can bring SmartStay feature to your Android devices. Ok! Lets see how to set up the app on your device,
Step 1: All you need to do is, just go ahead and download SmartStay Ex from Google Play Store. The app is free and comes with additional features for few dollars. Like the SmartStay feature of Galaxy devices, this application will make use of device’s front-facing camera to keep the display On when you are looking at it.
Step 2: Once the app is installed, make you sure to tap the button to turn it On on top right corner. You can also choose to start the application automatically whenever the device is booted, by selecting ‘Start at boot’ option.
The app will automatically scan your face at pre-defined interval using the front-facing camera. By default the app will scan the face twice within the specified system display backlight time out. Whenever the app scans your face, an yellow colored icon is displayed and turns to green if it detects the face properly. If not, it turns red.
Step 3: SmartStay Ex comes with a ‘Continuous Scan‘ option. But you need to have Android version 4.0 or higher. This mode will continuously scan your face, but at the cost of device battery life.
If you are not convinced with the functionality, then try adjusting ‘Scan Timeout‘ option to your convenience. Well, if you need more options, then the app costs $2.99; which will include ability to select exposure levels during low light conditions.
Checkout the SmartStay Ex @ Google Play Store.
