In this world and age we all live in each other’s pocket. And as the trend of global village has set in, anonymity is a luxury enjoyed by a handful! What are you thinking, how are you feeling, where have you been, who you are, is known by all at any given point in time. And this eventually gets on your nerves. How beautiful a world would be where you and I can restore our anonymity back and say what’s on our mind without being at the receiving end of an appalling reaction! And ‘Rumr’ is rumoured to do the same.
Group Chat with people you know, but anonymously
A brainchild of James Jerlecki, he expects the app thrive in the youth culture. This app is designed for some honest conversation without ruining a relation. Relation with strangers? No! The ones which already exist. It’s a group chat where you know everyone, but do not know who spoke what. And this is because of the nameless chat windows. These are highlighted with different colours which would help you keep a track of the conversation. So a large group would mean a strongly guarded identity of its members. The woes of fabricating a perfect message with the right words and correct grammar can now be kissed goodbye. You can now safely say, “It wasn’t me” without being caught.
How is Rumr different from other ephemeral apps?
So what? This sounds exactly like Whisper, Snapchat and its likes. Well, Rumr expects to differ and its slogan, evokes the feeling one experience at sleepovers, coffee meets and house parties. Those earnest words exchanged with friends when the lights go out and there’s no one to overhear. So one can always speculate and decode ‘Who-said-what’. This app is expected to build people’s capacity to empathize with other than to wedge a gap between them. Further, Jerlecki created the app keeping in mind the insecurities of the present day youth.
The app hopes to convince its users that there is someone out there who is always willing to hear and understand as well. This is very unlike Ask.fm and Yik Yak which spread rumours like wildfire disrupting the youth’s emotional and mental equilibrium. Rumr is a ‘problem solver’ instead of a ‘problem-maker’.
The future of the anonymous chat app
The only thing which is anonymous to both its creators and its users is the pattern and behaviour of its usage. These ephemeral apps are known to bring about new psychological changes. Rumr can support a group chat consisting of hundred people. Only the future would tell how and when Rumr is used by its users. These apps are usually created with one thing in mind but once launched; they completely take a different form. Jerlecki also shares his and his teammate’s experience of using the app.
He hopes this app to infect the youths first, moving on to infect the masses in the due course. That is something only time and users will tell.
