Unleashing the writer within us all – an app which enables us to write à la Hemingway

Updated on September 1, 2017

As a child everybody dreams to be something when they grow old. Some want to be an astronaut, others a doctor and then there are some who want to be something which no one has ever been. But most, at some point of time while growing up give writing a thought. They may not have the skill to spin a yarn, but still nurture the desire to write. If not for others, then about others, if not that then about them, writing has always been considered God’s gift. It isn’t something one can take up just for the heck of it.

But as we are speaking, there are millions who are writing right at this moment. Some turn out to be phenomenal and then there are those who unfortunately missed out on the opportunity when God was distributing this gift. But when God doesn’t provide, man is known to come up with a substitute. Not the best, but functional enough. And Ernest Hemingway app is just about that!

What is it?

Those of you who rarely rub shoulders with literature, this is for you- Ernest Hemingway is a classic writer who is acclaimed for his precise and elucidatory way of writing! This app basically lets you write like him (well, almost). It is just like any editor, which lets you copy and paste your work and makes the necessary changes. The app also analyses the verbs, adjectives and adverbs used in the sentence and rephrases or shortens it when needed. Your work would be a completely reformed piece of work once it makes its way out of the editor.

Everyone can now write like him through this app.

Creator’s speak

The brains behind this innovation are that of Adam and Ben Long. While Adam is product manager with a start-up firm, his brother is a copywriter based in New York. They both came up with this idea as their job is closely tied to writing. Most of the app was designed on Google Hangouts (as one is based in Carolina while the other in New York). One took care of the designing and the software while the other looked after the writing aspect of the app.

What about expressing yourself?

While the app has been appreciated by many, there are those who are concerned about losing their right to express. How boring a world would be where everybody writes in the same manner? Short and precise! We will stop appreciating the beauty of the works by Amitav Ghosh and Paolo Coelho, where the sentences itself bears no meaning, but the beauty lies in the compilation of these sentences.

Well, the creators of Hemingway are targeting those who work under pressure and are constantly threatened by deadlines. After a tiresome hour or so, the sentences seem strained and eventually lose the desired meaning. Then there are those who are learning English as a second language who can optimally utilise this app.

Final verdict

At the moment the app can be used without shelling out a dime. The duo is working on payable desktop version of the same. How many fans it gathers in the due course is yet to be seen, as the brothers are still holding on to their day jobs which speak volumes about Hemingway’s success.

  1. I find that sometimes when I’m writing (especially if it’s over 500 words), I make the same point over and over again. Hemingway doesn’t look out for this. any other content writers suffers from the same problem, INK sentences that are too similar.
