Clever hack brings Plex to the Apple TV with no jailbreak

Updated on September 1, 2017

Eventhough Apple hasn’t opened up Apple TV device to third-party developers yet it has added few apps from high-profile partners to the platform. Plex fans have now found a way to bring the media center software to Apple TV via a hack.

This Clever hack dubbed the PlexConnect does not need jailbreaking! It uses Apple’s movie trailers app like a trojan horse to bring Plex and users can route traffic to a Plex media server with a computer running a python script. So you can have all kinds of local content on un-jailbroken ATV2 and ATV3 (1080p) devices.

From the blog

“Unlike the other Plex client for ATV2, this one uses XML and Javascript, which means it’s super easy to develop for. We can only hope that Apple opens up their App Store to these ATV “widgets” at some point.”
