For all those looking for more variety in the Smartphones market, there’s good news – a new player is going to step into the Smartphone arena soon. This player is none other than Chinese Telecom major ZTE which was hitherto supplying handsets to Indian phone companies like Micromax and Karbonn and Telecom Operators like Reliance Communication and Idea Cellular. The company has decided to foray directly into the Smartphone market with 5 Smartphones priced between 5000 to 15000 INR.
ZTE India has tied up with Pune based firm Calyx to launch its phones in the Indian market. The company plans to sell at least a million smartphones in its first year and a long term goal of featuring among the Top 3 handset companies has been announced. Calyx will focus on the distribution, sales and marketing of ZTE phones in India. According to Gaurav Somani, Telecommunications Executive Director at Calyx, ZTE phones would initially be launched in 5 states – Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra – initially and would be available pan-India by October. The company plans to invest about 500 crore in distributions, inventory, and marketing of ZTE products.
ZTE has plans to launch Tablets later this year during the Diwali season. According to Xu Dejun, ZTE India CEO, the tablets will work on 3G or 4G technology and will be in the premium category. He further added that handset sales contributed to 10% of their revenue in India already and that their aim was to be a dominant player in the Indian market. Mr. Somani has revealed that plans are to set up a ZTE My Shop to sell exclusive ZTE products in the later stage as well.
