The new educator in town – TypeGenius promises to make you a font genius!

Updated on September 3, 2017

How seriously do you take your font? Yes, font as in F O N T, font, the shape and face of a letter while typing. I for one take it very casually. No scratch that, I used to take it casually until a professor decided to deduct marks for a presentation because of ‘inappropriate use of font’ (which I still believe was ridiculous). But , the fact still remains that fonts like dress codes has to be modified according to needs. Formal presentation calls for formal texts, fun and fancy calls for fun and fancy and then, there are those who do the integral work of designing sites and the like, they have to decide upon fonts, as well. There is always a psychological reaction at the sight of a font. One’s brain automatically senses the content before he or she gives it a read, just by way of looking at the font (people do judge a book by its cover).

All said and done, what does one do? Get in touch with an expert each time you work on a presentation? Harass people by asking them to go through your draft and tell you if the font is apt for the document? Or then, stick the the conventional fonts which has been used by others before. Why do all this? Instead, go to TypeGenius

TypeGenius’s simple interface

This online tool would help you in more than one way. One needs to go the main page, which by the way, is a simple interface without much clutter. Next, one needs to select a starter font from the long list of Google web fonts which has been enlisted in a drop down format. Once you decide upon a font, click on ‘View Matches’.

Your eyes will next see the combination which can go with the font you decided upon (or, first selected). The fonts which can accompany the main text would usually be enlisted in separate pages along with screenshots of websites which already uses similar fonts. This would give you an idea of the nature of the font and the context in which the font can be used.

The results

The only hitch? Well, TypeGenius’s list of fonts and resulting matches are quite limited. Creators have promised to add more to the existing list. As of now, the site is still a newbie in this big bad world. But this newbie is definitely worth checking out. Have you TypeGeniused yet?
